The lovely Mona's video for today was about her favorite movies, and I said "Me too, me too!" so many times as I listened to her. Since we both have such brilliant taste, and I know many of you do as well, here's a smattering of excellent moments from those excellent films.

First up, I know a lot of us adore The Last Unicorn. I've been mildly obsessed with it since I was little, even though it actually has an anime-ish look to it. I think I still know all the songs by heart, but this one is my favorite.

Next, I really wanted "Ooh De Lally", but apparently YouTube only has covers of it, or it in Hebrew or Swedish, etc. From Disney's Robin Hood, here's "The Phony King of England". Meaning John, of course, after whom all our toilets were named.

Keeping with the Disney theme, the best few minutes of Beauty and the Beast. Mrs. Potts can kick Celine Dion's butt any day. And Belle, you are still the awesomest bookworm heroine.

Ariel is a sixteen-year-old mermaid who's fascinated by the human world and longs to be part of it. Also, she had red hair. So, I didn't identify with her at all, and certainly didn't sing this song in my pool when I was a kid. :)

Whew, if I keep this Disney thing going, Michael Eisner may find and silence me at last. Okay, just two more...

The Hunchback of Notre Dame totally does not get the applause it deserves. Did anyone see this movie but me? Seriously. It's dark, gorgeous and inspiring, with amazing music. Rock me, Amadeus! I mean, take it away, Quasimodo!

And since we seem to be on a musical roll, I'll skip The Black Cauldron, awesome and underrated though it is, and move on to The Sword In The Stone, which was my very favorite as a little kid. Cut to many years later, look, a Grail fanatic. :)

And now, a classic tale of love and het that Amarissia can actually stand to look at. Behold, from The Princess Bride, the infamous Battle of Wits! To this day, I never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

It won eight Oscars, it deserved even more. Possibly, no definitely the greatest bio-pic of all time, it's so hard to choose one scene out of the glory that is Amadeus. I'm settling for Salieri's epiphany. (Mona, BTW, can you really do the laugh? My older sister used to be able to, but I asked for it so much that she eventually refused to do it and has since lost the ability.) :)

I could go on and on and on, but I'll save that for maybe a future batch. I shall leave you with a lullaby Cloud's rather fond of, from a movie I've always loved. "Flying Dreams", from The Secret of NIMH.

*hugs to all* Thanks for the lovely memories, Mona.

I saw The Hunchback of Notre Dame! I love it.

You do have great taste. :p

:) Thank you! Okay, that's at least one other person...

Hellfire - undoubtedly the most complex and adult Disney scene of all time. It terrified me when I was little, but now that I'm old enough to understand I watch it over and over. Horrid adaptation of a book does not necessarily a bad movie make, and Hunchback has a special place in my heart. Great taste!

Also omg when I was six years old the Last Unicorn was on TV and I was watching it, engrossed, and was called away about ten minutes before the end. I haven't been able to find it since. Is it on the internet somewhere?

And I forgot to add PRINCESS BRIDE AND AMADEUS -squeal- I mean I love all of the movies on your list but those two TOP ALL. <3 You're so cool. Let's watch movies sometime.

I know! When I read the book I was amazed at how different it was...but both are great.

Hmmmm, lemme see...you could try searching on YouTube. Old animated movies like that tend to get put up. Hold on...okay, looks like copyright claims have pulled it off of YouTube. This one might be good:

If not, Google a little till you find something more likely. I have it on VHS in a box...somewhere...eh, I plan to get it on DVD at some point.

Oh so many great memories here. Thanks for that little flash-back to my childhood Lol.

And The Hunchback of Notre Dame, that song was and is one of my two favorite Disney songs, still know the entire thing by heart. Second only to Pocohantus' Colors of the Wind.

Oh Disney, how I love thee. Alas, I am guilty.
The Hunchback, Pocohantus, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Hercules- Won't Say I'm In Love, The Lion King- We Are One, the list goes on.
I'm still such a sucker for their movies.

EEEEH! Sorry, just... love all of these movies. And, yes, Hunchback, Cauldron, and Sword happen to be my favorite Disney movies, thank you. Audrey and I would quote Hunchback constantly, I adored Phoebus, I wanted to be Esmeralda. And Frollo... so creepy. God. And they had that in a Disney movie, with the corruption and the religious scariness and the hair-sniffing. Gah! Where you sang "Part of Your World," I sang "God Help the Outcasts" late into the night until my dad yelled for me to go to sleep. And Cauldron... oh god, the Horned King used to freak me out in that fascinating way that used to make people look at me funny.

And NIMH... I still bawl. A lot. From the first few seconds. I just hear the song start on TV or something, and Nicodemus, and I start with Dane Cook's strobe asthma and drop anything I'm doing to watch. And sob. Because seriously, Mrs. Brisbee, just after losing her husband, finds out about a massive amount of shit that Jonathan never got to tell her about. And I refuse to acknowledge the sequel.

Oh, and goddamn, Princess Bride. Jason and I quote that back and forth to each other. I'm Inigo. Guess who Jason is, what with him being a giant and the semi-silent type and whatnot.
Friday, June 4th, 2010 03:41 am (UTC)
*panicked stare* There is no sequel. There. Now it does not exist 'cause I say so. Nyah! Whew. That's better.

I KNOW! Frollo all but whacked off thinking about Esmeralda, the perv. I love "God Help the Outcasts", I tend to hum it while I fold laundry. I don't know why.

I shared The Black Cauldron with my nice when she was little and she loved it as much as I did, right down to being scared of the Horned King and loving Gurgi. She can do a really good Eilonwy impression...
Friday, June 4th, 2010 01:29 pm (UTC)
...I generally start singing "Outcasts" when I'm pulling the clothes out of the dryer. Weird.

My sister? Awesome Gurgi impression. She'll walk into the kitchen sometimes grunting about "crunchy munchies" and I'll crack up every time because it's just spot on. She and I choke on tears when he sacrifices himself, even if he's revived, because everybody gave him a hard time and mistrusted him, and then BAM! he's all, "I'll save you." Tearing up now. Damn.
Friday, June 4th, 2010 04:11 pm (UTC)
Crunchings and munchings, LOL, he has such a cute little voice. GO AUDREY! Keep Gurgi alive in our hearts!

Why is it that laundry reminds us of that song? Weird.

She also does a kickass Chewie. That is, not the granola bar, but the wookie that'll rip your arms off if you accuse him of cheating. Oh, and my mom does a perfect Marvin Martian, and I can do Witch Hazel's cackle. Mom and Audrey can both do Bugs Bunny, so Audrey and I often sing back and forth to each other (me as Elmer) "Oh Brunhilda, you're so lovely!" "Yes, I know it--I can't help it."

Maybe it's the... no, no I don't know. I was going to say something about... well, laundry, duh, but whatever connection I made have made stopped short at a basket of warm clothes. My sister and I used to have the complete Hunchback set of Barbies and stuff. I got Phoebus and Esmerelda in her Fools dress, and Audrey got Quasi and Esmerelda in her every other scene except the one where she's burning dress. They came with Djalis, food, tambourines, and some of Quasi's carvings. Audrey ruined all of them--she had this thing where she'd chew on the feet of Barbies until they'd crumble off, and then she'd flatten the hands with her teeth until they looked like seal flippers.

It must be very interesting in your house. :)

I was thinking maybe the song is associated with laundry because of the tendency of socks to get lost. Then they become outcasts, in a way...I'm thinking about this way too deeply. :)

I like to spice up the in-home since I don't usually risk going outside. Today Audrey brought home a Tonberry sculpture she... er... sculpted in pottery, and since it was the same height as Odin (when she rears up on her hind paws like a tiny bear), we "summoned" Odin and pitted her against the sneaky Tonberry. That was a half hour of my day.

In any event, it's not like you can sing "Under the Sea," 'cause then you start dancing and it makes clothes harder to fold.
Saturday, June 5th, 2010 02:02 pm (UTC)
ACK! Tonberry! *hides*

Zack: "Tonberrys are bad-ass!" *is excited*

So who won? *fingers crossed for Odin*

For "Under the Sea", you really need back-up singers and tambourines and shit anyway...

I posted about the battle, since I figured a few other people were going to ask how it went.

Yeah. And a carp for that harp.

AHHHH AMADEUSSSS!!!!! I will one day write a Ph.D. on that movie, I love it so much, and the PLAY OMIGOD THE PLAY Peter Schaffer is a genius, it's incredible. The scene you showed comes at the end of the first act, and he goes into this tirade about God, and about Mozart, but not a single time does he say Mozart or Wolfgang, its ALWAYS JUST AMADEUS!!! Which translates to "God's love" and just brings it to the peak where it's not envy, it's not spite, it's not even toward Mozart, it's all towards God. OHHHH my god, that was a completely unnecessary epically long comment, ha.

SECRET OF NIMH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARRRRRRRGH I need to make another video, but it wouldn't do any good, I'd still forget so much.

Disney's Dark Age!!!! The BEST OF ALL!!!!! Why can't their movies be like that anymore? I don't think there's a single one I don't love....or have, hehe. :D When I was little, I think I had a huge crush on Robin Hood HA. And yes, I can do the Amadeus laugh, I'll have to do it for you one day, if I don't make myself laugh doing it. Specifically the wig scene, or the first meeting after those two little notes.

"WOLFY!!!!"

*Flails happily, can't stop smiling, dances and hugs self!!!!!!! and by an extension, yooooouuu!!!!*
Friday, June 4th, 2010 03:46 am (UTC)
YES YES, you must do the laugh. Just stick it randomly into one of your vids, and everyone but me will think you've just gone nuts. :)

I miss it too, back when Disney dared to look at the dark recesses of the human soul. Now it's all nothing that's unfit for toddlers, and all the shows blend together. My niece gives me this scandalized look when I mix them up. Bah, I was all about MMC and Kids Incorporated and DAMN Disney played some scary stuff, as I recall. Check out "Watcher in the Woods" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" if you get bored.

My sister had a crush on Robin Hood too. Well, he was a fox, after all. :) We used to play Robin Hood and she was always Marian...I was usually Clucky, the crazy maid.

"Amadeus" is just the perfect movie...and I've read the play, it's so beautiful, I must see it sometime. But the movie...oh, Salieri was just so evil and yet so understandable...I hated all things Italian for years because of him. And the haunted look on the priest's face at the end...

*gags self with duct tape to avoid going on* *hugs*

Oh Disney, how you made me love my childhood. :D

I used to love Aladdin as well, Rajah totally kicked ass XD And Jafar, oh Jafar &hearts
Friday, June 4th, 2010 10:58 pm (UTC)
Between my love of Disney and all things Final Fantasy, it's no big surprise that I'm such a sucker for Kingdom Hearts. And Disney World. Squeenix, you are missing out on metric shit-tons of money by not selling KH merchandise at WDW.

Oooh! ME TOO ME TOO! Especially NIHM and Hunchback. I heard that song for the first time actually while driving in NYC one night. They were playing it on NPR for some reason and as I listened I said...that can ONLY be something from some new version of Hunchback. It was so obvious and wonderfully dark.
