The lovely Mona's video for today was about her favorite movies, and I said "Me too, me too!" so many times as I listened to her. Since we both have such brilliant taste, and I know many of you do as well, here's a smattering of excellent moments from those excellent films.
First up, I know a lot of us adore The Last Unicorn. I've been mildly obsessed with it since I was little, even though it actually has an anime-ish look to it. I think I still know all the songs by heart, but this one is my favorite.
Next, I really wanted "Ooh De Lally", but apparently YouTube only has covers of it, or it in Hebrew or Swedish, etc. From Disney's Robin Hood, here's "The Phony King of England". Meaning John, of course, after whom all our toilets were named.
Keeping with the Disney theme, the best few minutes of Beauty and the Beast. Mrs. Potts can kick Celine Dion's butt any day. And Belle, you are still the awesomest bookworm heroine.
Ariel is a sixteen-year-old mermaid who's fascinated by the human world and longs to be part of it. Also, she had red hair. So, I didn't identify with her at all, and certainly didn't sing this song in my pool when I was a kid. :)
Whew, if I keep this Disney thing going, Michael Eisner may find and silence me at last. Okay, just two more...
The Hunchback of Notre Dame totally does not get the applause it deserves. Did anyone see this movie but me? Seriously. It's dark, gorgeous and inspiring, with amazing music. Rock me, Amadeus! I mean, take it away, Quasimodo!
And since we seem to be on a musical roll, I'll skip The Black Cauldron, awesome and underrated though it is, and move on to The Sword In The Stone, which was my very favorite as a little kid. Cut to many years later, look, a Grail fanatic. :)
And now, a classic tale of love and het that Amarissia can actually stand to look at. Behold, from The Princess Bride, the infamous Battle of Wits! To this day, I never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
It won eight Oscars, it deserved even more. Possibly, no definitely the greatest bio-pic of all time, it's so hard to choose one scene out of the glory that is Amadeus. I'm settling for Salieri's epiphany. (Mona, BTW, can you really do the laugh? My older sister used to be able to, but I asked for it so much that she eventually refused to do it and has since lost the ability.) :)
I could go on and on and on, but I'll save that for maybe a future batch. I shall leave you with a lullaby Cloud's rather fond of, from a movie I've always loved. "Flying Dreams", from The Secret of NIMH.
*hugs to all* Thanks for the lovely memories, Mona.

Also omg when I was six years old the Last Unicorn was on TV and I was watching it, engrossed, and was called away about ten minutes before the end. I haven't been able to find it since. Is it on the internet somewhere?

Hmmmm, lemme see...you could try searching on YouTube. Old animated movies like that tend to get put up. Hold on...okay, looks like copyright claims have pulled it off of YouTube. This one might be good:

If not, Google a little till you find something more likely. I have it on VHS in a box...somewhere...eh, I plan to get it on DVD at some point.

The Hunchback, Pocohantus, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Hercules- Won't Say I'm In Love, The Lion King- We Are One, the list goes on.
I'm still such a sucker for their movies.

And NIMH... I still bawl. A lot. From the first few seconds. I just hear the song start on TV or something, and Nicodemus, and I start with Dane Cook's strobe asthma and drop anything I'm doing to watch. And sob. Because seriously, Mrs. Brisbee, just after losing her husband, finds out about a massive amount of shit that Jonathan never got to tell her about. And I refuse to acknowledge the sequel.

I KNOW! Frollo all but whacked off thinking about Esmeralda, the perv. I love "God Help the Outcasts", I tend to hum it while I fold laundry. I don't know why.
I shared The Black Cauldron with my nice when she was little and she loved it as much as I did, right down to being scared of the Horned King and loving Gurgi. She can do a really good Eilonwy impression...

My sister? Awesome Gurgi impression. She'll walk into the kitchen sometimes grunting about "crunchy munchies" and I'll crack up every time because it's just spot on. She and I choke on tears when he sacrifices himself, even if he's revived, because everybody gave him a hard time and mistrusted him, and then BAM! he's all, "I'll save you." Tearing up now. Damn.

Why is it that laundry reminds us of that song? Weird.

Maybe it's the... no, no I don't know. I was going to say something about... well, laundry, duh, but whatever connection I made have made stopped short at a basket of warm clothes. My sister and I used to have the complete Hunchback set of Barbies and stuff. I got Phoebus and Esmerelda in her Fools dress, and Audrey got Quasi and Esmerelda in her every other scene except the one where she's burning dress. They came with Djalis, food, tambourines, and some of Quasi's carvings. Audrey ruined all of them--she had this thing where she'd chew on the feet of Barbies until they'd crumble off, and then she'd flatten the hands with her teeth until they looked like seal flippers.

I was thinking maybe the song is associated with laundry because of the tendency of socks to get lost. Then they become outcasts, in a way...I'm thinking about this way too deeply. :)

In any event, it's not like you can sing "Under the Sea," 'cause then you start dancing and it makes clothes harder to fold.

Zack: "Tonberrys are bad-ass!" *is excited*
So who won? *fingers crossed for Odin*
For "Under the Sea", you really need back-up singers and tambourines and shit anyway...

Yeah. And a carp for that harp.

SECRET OF NIMH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARRRRRRRGH I need to make another video, but it wouldn't do any good, I'd still forget so much.
Disney's Dark Age!!!! The BEST OF ALL!!!!! Why can't their movies be like that anymore? I don't think there's a single one I don't love....or have, hehe. :D When I was little, I think I had a huge crush on Robin Hood HA. And yes, I can do the Amadeus laugh, I'll have to do it for you one day, if I don't make myself laugh doing it. Specifically the wig scene, or the first meeting after those two little notes.
"WOLFY!!!!"
*Flails happily, can't stop smiling, dances and hugs self!!!!!!! and by an extension, yooooouuu!!!!*

I miss it too, back when Disney dared to look at the dark recesses of the human soul. Now it's all nothing that's unfit for toddlers, and all the shows blend together. My niece gives me this scandalized look when I mix them up. Bah, I was all about MMC and Kids Incorporated and DAMN Disney played some scary stuff, as I recall. Check out "Watcher in the Woods" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" if you get bored.
My sister had a crush on Robin Hood too. Well, he was a fox, after all. :) We used to play Robin Hood and she was always Marian...I was usually Clucky, the crazy maid.
"Amadeus" is just the perfect movie...and I've read the play, it's so beautiful, I must see it sometime. But the movie...oh, Salieri was just so evil and yet so understandable...I hated all things Italian for years because of him. And the haunted look on the priest's face at the end...
*gags self with duct tape to avoid going on* *hugs*
