[Error: unknown template qotd]

This question caught my eye because it's something I always wonder about LJ friends. As for me, I use Amarissia here because it's the name I use at fanfiction.net, so it's become my online name for anything yaoi. (The less naughty part of me goes by Athlynne, so if you see me on YouTube feel free to say hi, but kindly don't point and yell "I know you, you're the one who writes squicky yaoi!" Civilians are not prepared to handle that kind of thing.)

Anyway, there's no interesting story behind the name's origin. I needed a name, and it was the first thing to pop into my head. (And it starts with 'A', I seem to collect 'A' names.) I regretted it afterward. If I had known I would use this name so much, I would have taken care to choose something that doesn't make me think of something big and frilly and lacy, like a human doily.

Anyone else care to share?

ADDENDUM: Thank you all for indulging me!

Mine, once I read a fic by Strange and Intoxicating -rsa- called Chalk Butterflies, and I tought it was really sweet and sad. Then, about a week later, I was trying to think of a FF.net name, and that fic kept popping into my head. A friend of mine then showed me an art project that he had been working on for ages, and it was white and blue chalk butterflies on a black background. At that stage, I decided the art and the fic not getting out of my head, so I decided to take the hint. Besides, at the time, I thought the whole "fleeting, ephermeral beauty" thing would be a good idea. Looking back on it, it was kinda posery and emo, but I always remember that drawing when I log on to LJ or FF.net.
And hey! I like your username! Better then mine, named in a moment of melancholy.

I like yours better...and the way it came to you, it was obviously fated to be!

Hmm, I don't recall that story, and since it's by Sai, I really should. Is it FFVII?

Well, my first nick was Spearmint and I used it for years... When me and my sister were 13/14 we wanted to do an art site and needed nick names. We wanted something that was, well, related to each other since we are twins. At that time we loved "Oh! My Goddess" (and still do) and one of the characters had twin angels and they were called Spearmint and Coolmint. So we adopted the names and used them in almost every account we had.
After many years and lots of drama (never between each other, thank God xD), we wanted to change our nicks... And since I'm ever so original *rolls eyes* I just picked buttertoast xP I really like toasts...
I also use buttercake in one place or another. And my older accounts are named Smint xP

You have a twin? That is so awesome!!!!

I think buttertoast is cute. :)

I used to play a MMORPG and needed a name for my main character (a mage, of course). I liked Patricia A. McKillip's stories and thought Atrix Wolfe would make a good name. I tried Atrix but it was taken (or one very similar). So I changed the spelling to Etrix and the rest is history. If I can't use Etrix, I often use Etrixan for no reason I can remember. =]

My original internet name in all things was keldjinfae, and I still use [livejournal.com profile] keldjinfae_moon whenever I actually happen to write something. It's simply three of my favorite creatures from mythology and folklore (the kelpie, the djinn, and the faeries of the Seelie and Unseelie courts), and the moon, for it's always been my favorite celestial body.

Currently it's... what you see now, after knowing Casey, Jer, and Britt. Initially Casey started calling me Kel, Jer then followed suit, believing it was my real name until he found out what it actually was at Sakura-Con (plus, I could never shuck the kelpie), and at that same Con developed the second half. I was talking to Casey about meeting up with her and following her around "like a pilot fish" because... I get lost. Easily. And the nickname stuck, I became the Pilot Fish, my journal name became what it is now ('cause it's better than shellfish). Casey's the Mako Shark, Jer's the Elusive Not-Giant Squid, Britt's the Barracuda, and together we formed The Aquarium, my final username.
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 04:12 pm (UTC)
I KNEW you were a fellow fan of the Wee Folk. (Yes, I am a genius, because all the kelpie talk didn't make it clear.) Gah.

AHA, idea! If you guys ever do that reality show I've suggested, you can end each episode with a segment of your heads CGI'd onto fish in a large aquarium. You can discuss the moral of that week's show, and then one of you can get scooped up by a net. I'm still thinking this out.

AH, do you too have no sense of direction? I'm surprised I don't get lost going to the abthroom.

My name reflects my lack of imagination. A bazillion years ago when I signed up for my first ISP, I was listening to a Lenine CD. There was already a lenine and lenine1, so I just chose lenine2. Why I kept the "2" when I signed up on LJ is a mystery. "lenine" wasn't taken, and I've since acquired it, but don't know how to transfer my current journal to a new, already taken, name.

There are other lenine2s out there in internet-land. Not the most original name, but it's easy for me to remember.

Brb, searching Athlynne so I can point and yell "I know you, you're the one who writes awesome slash!" Anyone unprepared to handle what that means won't understand it. :P

You already know mine--lilies and morning glory! And also because Lily is a kickass name.
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 04:15 pm (UTC)

So should I call you Lily now, or still Slovu?

On the early internet and BBSs I mostly used variants on my name, like Marushka or Marichan. Didn't take long for those to become unavailable, and I'd run across a guy called Robopope on some of the bulletin boards, so I shamelessly stole the idea and made it my own. Kind of like Thomas Edison, only I don't send hired muscle to do "patent enforcement" with baseball bats.
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 04:18 pm (UTC)
...clearly Thomas Edison was not the kindly old kook I always pictured. Yike.

Okay, good, so you're not a robot nun. I tried to confirm this with Cloud whenever he got back from a visit with you, but he was always too hyped up from video games. And frankly, nothing phases Cloud, not even robots with rosaries, so he wouldn't have noticed.

I like the name Amarissia, it's pretty.I always pronounced it like it's written in katakana (A.ma.ri.ssha) and it makes me think of an exotic story-teller or singer.

As for my LJ name, it's based off my singing/acting name. It's taken from 3 singers I love: mi Hamasaki, Ai Oono, & ya Hirahara. The 86 is my birth year.
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 04:25 pm (UTC)

Amarissia is a great name :).

Been using mine for over 10 years now :S, when I was about 12 I got obsessed with David Eddings and wrote some appalling Mary Sue stuff where my character was the twin sister of the main character, Garion. I liked the name Garina a lot, so it's stuck with me through every username account and game character that I've been able to use it for. Rayne has a similar origin, was writing similarly bad Buffy fic and made my char Ethan Rayne's niece. Hence Garina Rayne, and I like the sound of it despite it's squirmy origins :D
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 04:36 pm (UTC)
Even if it came from the darkness of Mary Sue-dom, it redeems itself by having a nice ring to it. I may steal it if I ever fulfill my dream of being made into an RPG White Mage.

The sound of "Amarissia" somehow stuck with me. XD Sometimes I forget some fanfiction writers' names, but yours I always remembered for some reason! (And the awesome fics play no part in this, no no! :D)

Mine... I stuck with Loctavia for a while when I'd just started going on the net (was about eight or nine, obsessed with elven stories and other fantasy legeds...), but then I got into Japanese culture (NOT AN OTAKU, I SWEAR ;___; ) and changed it to just Sayori, which originated from Sayuri (Memoires of a Geisha). Then a friend I consider to be my sister gave me the name "Motohime" as a last name for my character. XD
Sometimes, when playing games in a more Western setting, I change my username to Gharuel and sometimes Gharuel Shaan if I need a last name. Yeah, the elven legends are still there. XD

ENOUGH RANTING! Glad you're doing good! XD And tell me if you want any more drawings, I've been too lazy to get to my pencil these days and I need some good motivation. :)
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 04:39 pm (UTC)
:)

We must campaign to make the word 'otaku' less pejorative. I mean, it even has a nice sound to it. Otaku, otaku, otaku. I feel like I'm doing a ceremonial chant to summon a water demon or soemthing, but still...

HA, I was right, I thought your name might be related to Sayuri. I like 'em both, they remind me of chery trees and twilight (NOT the book series) and other otherworldly things.

Cloud is shouting in my ear that if you can draw his new baby chocobo Patrick, he will be your BFF...

My name is sorta...one; one of many, and two; random words put together that I liked at the time o.O It’s the name of my OC band that currently holds my obsession.
(My ff.net name’s easier to explain. My yaoi-like wasn’t known by anyone for a while, and so as I wrote it I wanted my name to reflect the secrecy – so, MaskedVendetta...I had just watched “V for Vendetta” too X3)

V For Vendetta! I was way too affected by that movie. Only time I ever bounced out of a theater and announced (way too loudly) that I really wanted to go blow up Parliament. I'm hoping I can avoid the urge if I ever make it to the motherland...

Like loads of other people, I like your name and it doesn't make me think of doilies... or it didn't, but probably will do now.

The story behind my name is kinda long so I posted it on my journal. Here's an edited verstion:

It was the name of an original character who my family disliked, so I stopped writing about it.

I also use BrandedSoren - because I totally adore Soren from Fire Emblem and he's 'Branded' which will take ages to explain (or do you know about Fire Emblem?) and variations on things about wolves. I like wolves. :)
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 04:55 pm (UTC)
Next time I need a name I'll use 'The Human Doily'. Everyone will recognize me!

Thank you! Hmm, don't know Fire Emblem, no, is that a book series? Sadly, as a Trekker, when I think Soren I think "You killed Kirk, you bastard!" So, um, probably good I didn't meet you under that name...

Back in high school, I once had a horrid cold, and went hoarse. If you know me, I never let a lack of a voice stop me from talking (or actually in this instance, laughing). But in this particular instance, every time I laughed, it sounded like I was croaking. So instead of typing ROFL, I'd type ROFC, and people started calling me Kermit, which degenerated to Frog, and a friend of mind tacked on the second g. When I went to start my livejournal, frogg was taken, so I grabbed thefrogg. And I've been known by it ever since.

And yes, I have a collection of small frog figurines and bookmarks and frog-themed...stuff.

I think your LJ name is very lovely. It sounds exotic and mysterious. :)

When I first started on the internet, way, way, *way* back (let's not think about that being several 'way' too many), I needed a name for my email address. So I looked out my home-office window and there was a raven sitting on one of these huge steel power poles that mar our countryside, and the moon was full and illuminating both it and the steel frame. That image stayed with me so I became Ravensilver. :) I've been using it as a username pretty much everywhere. :)

Though my standard LJ user picture isn't a raven, it's the first, long-term playing character that I had in a MMORPG - Dark Age of Camelot - I was a championesse. :) Also called Ravensilver. *ggg*

Oh, did you manage to make the link at Y!Gallery work? Otherwise I'd be happy to mail the story to you. Just keep the choir away from it, I don't think they need any more 'ideas'. ;)

etto...let's see. I guess my username is actually two parts: saiya and ruki. Both are names I've used for stories that stayed in my head. Saiya I stole from Peacemaker (the girl's name is actually Saya but I always preferred my spelling of it). Ruki originally was the name of a dragon (this was 6th grade mind you). Eventually it evolved into one of my quiet yet deadly female characters. I have decided not to use the name for characters any more since I plan to use it as my pen name when I get published. My FF.net name Hope in the Shadows was created to reflect how my writing was helping with the crap that was going on in my life at the time. My other FF account Kaze No Kaoru was another name based on a character(s).

P.S. I love your name even if you think it's too frilly. In fact I think it fits you ^^

If I ever actually wrote something that would be published, of the "squicky" variety ;) then I would use L.R. Matthews as my pen name. PG stuff would be basically the same, just slightly tweaked.

As for "Scripta Lexicona"...that's derived from something my husband named ages ago. It just means my body of work. :)
