I did know this at one point. Something about hemp competing with the paper industry and Willian Randolph Hearst throwing a big hissy fit, or something.

Also, the people in charge are stupid. Just in general.

meh, that's pretty much it in a nutshell. don't you just love people with greed and control issues? :)

I think it had less to do with conspiracy and more to do with racism: an attempt to stamp out the dissolute urban jazz (read as: black) culture. Keeping white kids away from demon weed was part of preventing miscegenation, maintaining moral character, and all that happy horseshit.

My opinion: legalize it, regulate it, tax it. Until then I'm waiting for retirement to spark up. I want to be that 80-year-old busted for possession on the police blotter.

Mmm, yeah. My dad told me that when he was a kid, adults told them all drugs were equally bad. So those who tried marajuana and felt fine thought nothing of trying heroin. :( Dumb grown-ups.

Actually, I think there were issues with Mexicans and taxation when it all first started. Of course, this is from a History Channel documentary a couple years ago, and I very well could be mis-remembering....

Yup, hemp was an inexpensive material that was meant to replace paper but then Hearst, Wurst, whateverurst got greedy. Like most people of money, fame, and power do. And in a nutshell, somehow made marijuana out to be this drug that drove people insane and make people kill each on homicide. In a nutshell. Full of nuts....that are in a shell. :)

But really, we were pretty stupid back then. Well, not that we aren't now, but we were lacking in a lot of information. And common sense. And sanity....We're really hopeless sometimes, aren't we? :P

I think it's cause teh people in charge don't want us to smoke anything that's -not- addicting. Bad for business, dontcha know?
